About this deal

About this time every year I get a little excited knowing there's likely to be a new book from Michael Connelly. This year has not disappointed - we have a new Bosch/Ballard book - Desert Star. With 24 Harry Bosch books behind us we’re well aware that Bosch doesn’t play well with others. But with Ballard he’s about as much of a team player as he might ever be. When gets on the trail there’s little that will stand in his way and that’s part of what makes this such a compelling series - and has done over an extended period. For years, Harry Bosch has been working a case that haunts him—the murder of an entire family by a psychopath who still walks free. Ballard makes Bosch an offer: come volunteer as an investigator in her new Open-Unsolved Unit, and he can pursue his “white whale” with the resources of the LAPD behind him.

Review on English, followed by the Bulgarian one.

Michael Connelly, another triumph. I had some great discussions with fellow members of the Harry Bosch Appreciation Club - Naomi and Mercedes - once we all finished this one.Detective Mole: Harry and Renee eventually figure out that this is why Ted Rawls got his friend Jake Pearlman to put him on the Open-Unsolved unit. Rawls killed Sarah Pearlman, and he wanted to keep tabs on the investigation. The whole book has a tired feel to it. MC might be interested only in the TV series, but he should know that there are some book lovers who don't watch TV and OTT (like me!). Told with the same smooth prose that his fans have come to expect, Michael Connelly’s Desert Startwists and turns its way towards a gripping and thrilling final act that’s impossible to put down. While Connelly continues to build out Ballard, who may one day very well carry this franchise on her own, he certainly hasn’t forgotten about Bosch. Not only does Harry have plenty of screen time, but his famous creed, “everyone matters, or nobody matters,” is tested when he’d prefer to keep working the Gallagher case rather than divert energy elsewhere simply because of a powerful political connection. Moreover, the relationship (and trust) between Bosch and Ballard continues to develop too. It’s especially fun to see Harry’s low-tech, old-school approach versus Renee’s penchant to embrace technology and newer, cutting-edge forensics. The balance is nice, but more importantly, highlights how the two characters really are better together than apart. It appears Harry may be coming to the end of his detective career, but I hope he doesn't hang up his credentials just yet. Retired Los Angeles police detective Harry Bosch, now seventy-years-old, likes to listen to jazz, schmooze with his police detective daughter, and mull over haunting cold cases, like the brutal murder of the Gallagher family.

With two killers on the loose, it’s once again up to Bosch and Ballard to connect the dots and bring justice to the victims and their families—but this time, they’re faced with new challenges and more danger than ever before. Review of the Little, Brown and Company audiobook edition, released simultaneously with the Little, Brown and Company hardcover original (November 8, 2022).

Renée Ballard stood on the front step. Bosch had not seen her in almost a year. She looked thinner than he remembered. He could see where her blazer had bunched over her sidearm on her hip.
