About this deal

Other than this, you can stay cool and quiet even while playing those crazy fast games thanks to the fine-tuned cooling system attached to these gaming laptops. MSI Stealth 16 (9S7-15F212-011) The Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 (2023) is based around an Intel Core i9-13980HX chip, which on paper should be the fastest mobile CPU that Intel has ever made. With 16 E-Cores running at up to 3.4GHz and and 8 P-Cores running at up to 5.4GHz, it can monster its way through 24 simultaneous threads, and that’s just what it does given half a chance. Update: Here are the configurations available for the Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 and Scar 18 (2023) series: On to more demanding loads, we start by testing the CPU’s performance by running the Cinebench R15 test for 15+ times in a loop, with a 1-2 seconds delay between each run. This configuration can easily handle all the modern games at QHD+ resolution and Ultra settings, with or without RT. While still a step down from the RTX 4090 model, the gaming performance of this RTX 4080 Scar 16 is still a notable improvement over the fastest gaming laptops of the past generations, with the Core i9 HX processors and the RTX 3080Ti 175W dGPU.

Attempting to calibrate the display on this multi-zone mode doesn’t fix the recorded imbalances in gamma, white point, and DeltaE color accuracy. Thus, I wouldn’t use this mode for color-accurate work, as previously explained. With the Asus set to its default Performance mode, it dished out a Geekbench multi-threaded score of 19,266 and a Cinebench R23 result of 25,152, making even the mighty Core i9-13800H look positively puny. And that’s just getting started. Switch up to Turbo mode and you can hit 30,867 in the Cinebench rendering benchmark, which is visibly fast enough to make your jaw drop and leave it hanging for a while. The SCAR 16 can also be equipped with a QHD+ 240Hz Nebula HDR Display, offering fantastic colour, Dolby Vision, Adaptive-Sync support, and an 89% screen-to-body ratio for a stellar gaming and viewing experience. Powered by NVIDIA DLSS 3, the ultra-efficient Ada Lovelace arch, and Max-Q Technologies, the Katana 17 B13V delivers exceptional gaming graphics with lifelike details, vibrant colours, and lightning-fast performance.Furthermore, this panel is 240Hz refresh with fast response times (3-7 ms GtG), both must-have features on a modern gaming laptop – it’s not quite as fast as a standard IPS panel of this generation, though, due to the technical particularities of the mini LED technology. On top of these, GSync is supported on the main display with the 2023 ROG laptops, for smooth images without any tearing in games. Keep in mind that I’ve measured the below FLIR recordings in a 24-25 C ambient room, with the laptop on the desk. Placing the laptop on a raised stand will positively impact these temperatures, dropping them by 2-3 degrees in the hottest spots, and the outer conditions in your place will also impact the readings. There’s no such miniLED panel on the Scar 18, which instead can be specced up to an 18-inch Nebula IPS panel with 500 nits of peak SDR brightness, but otherwise similar colors and gaming capabilities. Both these panels are pretty much the best you can find these days in the 16 and 18-inch segments.

With PCIe Gen4x4 SSD storage and up to 32GB of 4800MHz DDR5 RAM, you can store large game libraries and multitask like a pro. Our review unit is a powerful configuration with the Intel Core i9-13980HX processor, Nvidia RTX 4080 Laptop 175W dGPU, and a mini LED display. You can also opt for the 4090 on this series, if your budget allows it, and we’ll discuss the performance differences between the two GPUs in the article. The light bar on the front edge of the laptop is no longer integrated into the D-Panel, as on the previous generation, which means you can easily lift up the panel without any concern. We’ll know more about the performance of these news specs in these updated implementations once we get to review the 2023 Scars, somewhere in the next few weeks. We’ll also carefully look into the thermals and noise levels of these designs, on the various power profiles offered in Armoury Crate. Across a multiplicity of graphics tests, it’s impossible to say which is the outright better performer, the 150W/16GB RTX 4090-equipped Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 or the 175W/12GB RTX 4080-equipped Scar 16.Get a quantum leap in performance in games and creative apps with AI-powered DLSS 3 and enable lifelike virtual worlds with full ray tracing. In fact, I do preffer having a bigger 16:10 display on these laptops, and the extra screen real-estate is noticeable on both sizes. The smaller bezels are noticeable as well. Battlefield V, Cyberpunk, Doom, Witcher 3 – recorded with Fraps/in-game FPS counter in campaign mode;

The Turbo mode ramps up the fans to levels of ~50 dB with the laptop sitting on the desk. This is fine for a top-performance profile, but still very loud and you’ll ideally want to cover it up with headphones.To further measure GPU performance, we also run two tests from the cross-platform GPU benchmark GFXBench 5, which stresses both low-level routines like texturing and high-level, game-like image rendering. The 1440p Aztec Ruins and 1080p Car Chase tests, which are rendered offscreen to accommodate different display resolutions, exercise graphics and compute shaders using the OpenGL programming interface and hardware tessellation respectively. The more frames per second (fps), the better. Three benchmarks focus on the CPU, using all available cores and threads, to rate a PC's suitability for processor-intensive workloads. Maxon's Cinebench R23 uses that company's Cinema 4D engine to render a complex scene, while Geekbench 5.4 Pro by Primate Labs simulates popular apps ranging from PDF rendering and speech recognition to machine learning. Finally, we use the open-source video transcoder HandBrake 1.4 to convert a 12-minute video clip from 4K to 1080p resolution (lower times are better). Dominate the Windows 11 Pro battlefield with the all-new ROG Strix SCAR 16. Introducing a 16-inch screen to the SCAR lineup for the first time, see the enemy more clearly than ever before. Powered by a 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13980HX Processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU with a max TGP of 175W, the SCAR 16 easily handles even the most demanding games. It also comes with a dedicated MUX Switch with support for NVIDIA Advanced Optimus, enabling you to easily harness the true power of your GPU when gaming. With support for up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM and up to 4TB of PCIe Gen4x4 storage, the SCAR 16 can easily game, stream, and create content all at the same time without breaking a sweat. For the ultimate gaming laptop, look no further than the Strix SCAR 16.

For gamers who demand the absolute best motion and image clarity, the SCAR 16 offers an incredible Mini LED Nebula HDR panel with a 240Hz refresh rate, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, and a staggering 1100 nits of peak brightness for stunning HDR gameplay. The 16-inch, 16:10 aspect ratio panel with an 90% screen-to-body ratio is perfect for fast moving arena shooters and other frenetic games. The SCAR 16 can also be equipped with a Full HD 165Hz panel. No matter what kind of gamer you are, the SCAR’s new 16-inch panel is sure to impress. The Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 is no slouch on the sound front, either. The quad-speaker Dolby Atmos system puts out plenty of volume and there’s a nice, wide virtual surround soundstage that’s superb for casual gaming. If you’re into competition you’ll still want a headset, but I found the big screen and big audio made for one of the richest, most immersive gaming experiences I’ve had without VR or a 40-inch plus screen. Performance The difference between victory and defeat can be separated by a single keystroke, so the SCAR 16 has a professional esports grade keyboard designed to secure the win. Built to last, the Strix SCAR's keyboard switches are rated to last over 20 million presses, and n-key rollover guarantees your system will never miss command even if you’re pressing multiple keys at once. The SCAR has a full-sized keyboard, with dedicated media controls and dedicated hotkeys that are tuned for volume and Armoury Crate controls by default, but can be customized for different functions or macros. And with per key RGB and full Aura Sync customization, the SCAR will always have the looks to match your mood.
