And then there is the Marcus factor. He had a history with this man. They had a friendship as boys that played out to them becoming men. Marcus was not a warm fuzzy person. He didn’t have friends to spare.

Also it was so cool to see St. Vincent (sigh) and Evie, and Westcliff and Lillian. I like how down to earth Lillian is, and it's clear that she's been a great influence on Westcliff, although he's still bossy as ever. Although kidnapping had not, until recently, been on Sebastian’s long list of villainous acts, he really should have been more clever about it.The red-haired and very shy Wallflower-Evangeline Jenner "Evie" and the.."drumroll".........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................extreme immoral and a hell of a sexy badboy with the worst reputation ever (which he are proud of) Sebastian Lord St. Vincent..are a explosive pair of characters who fitted each other p.e.r.f.e.c.t.l.y..just WOW..!

As for your description of Kleypas’s recent books, I remember an entry she wrote on Squawk Radio this past year in which she outlined her writing process, and it reminded me of your description, Janine, in that it seemed to be more situationally driven vis a vis the characters and the progression of their relationship.Amelia had stepped up and taken charge of her family since her older brother, Leo, lost his fiancée to scarlet fever and he had become incapable of taking care of himself. At the age of twenty-six, she considered herself a spinster. And because of her responsibility to her family, she’d never expected to marry anyone. But then came Cam, an unusual man, a mysterious Rom who would change her life forever. So the shy, stuttering heroine (who slips in and out of her character throughout the whole book) approaches the vicious rake and makes him an offer he can’t refuse. She would share her inheritance if he promises to marry her and take her out of her messed-up domestic situation. So far, so good.

Another aspect of the book I liked was its gambling club setting. It was a welcome change from the London houses and country mansions where so many nineteenth century historicals take place.Cam’s total adoration, relentless wooing, and gentle caring and cherishing of Amelia is profoundly sweet and incredibly romantic. I just loooved him! I think Cam Rohan might even be my favorite ever Lisa Kleypas historical romance hero, which is really saying something considering that all of her heroes are flat-out the swoon-worthiest, very best of the bunch! My feelings about St. Vincent are a little more complicated. I don't really like that he's hanging out in alpha limbo. He's a bit too...courtly to be straight up gamma/alpha, but he's way too rapey and chauvinistic for me to accept him as a "nice" hero. His constant bragging about his prowess definitely garnered an eye-roll or two from me. That said, he had some great lines. Sexy lines. He's the perfect example of a character who you might find sexually attractive but would make a sh*tty boyfriend.

Sebastian’s gaze did not move from her face, though he kept his tone light. “How inconsiderate of them. Why should I care?” As we come to meet him, we see that Sebastian is not the hero that one might have expected him to be. Being that he is a rake, the people regard him with a lot of disdain, which, as it turns out, isn’t uncalled for. Where do I begin? Well, let´s take Amelia Hathaway, Cam´s heroine. She was nice enough, but I just didn´t feel her "connection" with Cam. I got the feeling that she was more interested in her family than anything else, Cam included. When I read a romance novel, I NEED to feel that the hero and the heroine are made/meant for each other, but this didn´t happen with Cam and Amelia. To be honest, I felt sorry for Cam, because he deserved a better heroine. It also bothered me that Cam never told Amelia his tribal name. Considering his beliefs, it was the same as never saying "I love you" to her.

I'd have never thought to find that kind of emotional connection or torment in a secondary relationship, but that scene, the way it was so poignantly written, will stay with me for years and years to come.
