About this deal

I can't imagine what it is like to lose a parent prematurely and at a relatively young age, however these raw and emotional sections are insightful, honest and beautifully written. It is quite simply the best music biography I’ve read since Cash by Johnny Cash and as a bonus it also contains allusions to Luis Boa Morte. The best book I've read about cricket - although it's not about cricket really - rather an essay on grief and how cricket and music helped the author both and cope and avoid the tragic loss of his mum. The exploits of Tufnell (another bowler of 'lovely loopy stuff'), Atherton, Hussain et al, are given extra import through the eyes of a cricket-obsessed youth.

In many ways, the book and Felix's commentary on The Maccabees' development, maturation and eventual break-up, allowed me to explore my own grief of a band that I grew up with and have never been able to replace.I was often surprised and moved by his passionate understanding of cricket as comfort, consolation and rock and roll remedy. Not only is this book well written, poetic and captivating, with its threads running between subjects and moments in time that intertwine in a beautiful way, it is also deeply personal and heartfelt. The Pop artist Pauline Boty reveals she married ‘the first man I could talk very freely to’ ten days after meeting him. The final crow barred reference of England's World Cup triumph as some sort of personal victory for the author is laugh out loud funny (in the bad way) and narcissistic in equal measure. A lot of my own thoughts and feelings without any of his highs and for that matter (hopefully) lows are reflected in his words.

Really enjoyed this and in many ways I could relate to the duality… in the sense that this book was about cricket and about coping with the premature death of one’s mother. It’s Always Summer Somewhere is his funny, heartbreaking and endlessly engaging love letter to the game. This had a very similar literary style to the Broken Greek by Pete Paphides although it is none the worse for that. Kathy Collier, who worked with Dunn in a Battersea sweet factory, talks about what it takes to ‘get out’ of a life that isn’t fulfilling. The maccabees stuff was fantastic, I loved it - a great insight but it didn't appear until halfway through. His band, The Maccabees, released four studio albums before disbanding at their commercial peak after a number one album, major festival headline shows and an Ivor Novello award. And, through the prism of her extraordinary experiences, she offers vital insights into the nature of race, class, feminism, sexuality and ageing in modern Britain. It was this devotion that led to the birth of the Bunnymen, to the days when he and Ian McCulloch would muck around with reel-to-reel recordings of song ideas in the back parlour of his parents’ council estate house, and to finding a community – friends, enemies and many in between – with those who would become post-punk royalty from the likes of Dead or Alive, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and the Teardrop Explodes to name a few.

I knew from the introduction that this would go straight into my list of favourite books, driven in part by my pre-existing bias based on my love for The Maccabees. This is an extraordinary first book … funny, tragic, candid and heartfelt; it would be remarkable if he ever wrote a better one.To sum it up, this is a life story, told through cricket with little bits of family and maccabees interspersed. His description of his rise to fame with The Maccabees, his absorption with cricket and lack of connection in relationships was both uplifting and tear jerking. In 1964, Nell Dunn spoke to nine of her friends over a bottle of wine about sex, work, money, babies, freedom and love.

His passion for the game is at the fore on the BBC's number one cricket podcast and 5Live show, 'Tailenders,' which he co-presents with Greg James and Jimmy Anderson. The book covers White’s life thus far, intertwining his personal experiences - losing his mum to MS as a teen - with music and with cricket, chronicling the ups and downs of the England men’s team, and including interviews with those who’ve played the game such as Mike Atherton, Phil Tufnell and Chris Lewis. A very unusual rock star, as he mentions in the book, it’s the first I’ve read that focuses on nearly everything else in life and puts priority on that over being in a band. Felix encapsulates what cricket means to so many, and despite it being a sport which can be baffling to a neutral and engrossing to those who know, his words show a love for the game.

I was gifted this book as I have been a maccabees fan since the very beginning and I was very excited to read it. This troubadour life is only for the fiercest hearts, only for those vessels that can be broken to smithereens and still keep beating out the rhythm for a new song. It's Always Summer Somewhere' is Felix's funny, heart-breaking and endless engaging love letter to the game of cricket.
